the top of the world – june 22-23 2013

The top of the world…well, not exactly but we were on top of Mount Spokane. We decided to go ahead and get one little trip in before we get the preparations done for the Montana truck camper rally in less than two weeks. So we went to Mount Spokane State Park. The park is pretty close to our home, about a 25-30 minute drive. We have gone skiing up at the resort several times over the years but not spent anytime up there during the summer time. The state park does have a very small campground, no hookups. We like the location of the campground but don’t care for how the sites are all on top of each other. There is a small privately owned lodge right before you enter the state park that has 10 or so rv sites. The sites have power and at only $3.00 more a night fee compared to the state park, we decided to stay there on Saturday night.

First thing though we passed the lodge and entered the state park. We wanted to do some hikes on the many trails that are there and also try to get a few geocaches found. So we parked about halfway up the mountain and went for a nice hike. We have never been on these trails and after hiking them, we wondered why we have not done this sooner.

a bit cloudy this day but still okay weather for a hike.

The hike on this day was only 3 miles. We found our geocache and then went back to the camper and drove a bit more up the mountain. There was lots of bear grass in bloom.

there was another geocache here but we failed to find it. it was off in the trees somewhere.

As we got closer to the top we went into the low clouds. We hoped it would clear off.

Nope, the fog / low clouds did not burn off. We wandered around and found a geocache that was hidden up top.

I think they are ready to go back down the mountain.

We decided to go ahead and go back down lower to the lodge and settle into our camp spot for the night. It is not a bad little campground. At $25.00 a night for power and pretty much solitude with a creek running behind the spot, we will take it.

We returned to the mountain early the next day. The hike we wanted to do today was longer but not too bad. Only about 7 miles of hiking this day. So we drove about 2/3 of the way up the mountain to the parking spot. Then we were on foot from there.

We made it to the peak of Mount Kit Carson. WOW! the views are amazing at this spot. The hike was well worth it. We also found the geocache hidden at this wonderful place. The elevation here is 5,249 feet. Not a big mountain for these parts by any means but still high enough to get the great view.

We had more hiking to do. This time it was to another mountain peak about 1 1/2 miles away. There was still lots of bear grass in bloom along the way.

We made it to the other mountain peak in a short amount of time. Walking through heavily treed areas and wide open grassy areas filled with flowers in bloom and butterflies fluttering from flower to flower.  We also found the geocache at this location. It took us a while to find this one but we were successful in the end.

As with so many places in this country the CCC did a lot of work that we get to enjoy to this day. Our hike takes us past a lodge that the crew built back in 1935. I am amazed at all the stone work through out this area, the stone pathway and retaining walls had to have taken a while to build. Hard work was done by these people.

We made it back to our camper. What a great hike it was. With the weather clear and sunny we decided to go back to the top of Mount Spokane. The mountain has an elevation of 5,889 feet. No where near the tallest mountain we have been on but enjoyable just the same.

I told you there was great views from up here.

We decided it was a prefect place to have lunch, so we did. We ate our lunch then decided that it was the end of this trip. We made our way back down the mountain and headed home.

So yet another place that is close to our home that we have not taken full advantage of going to and exploring. We will return and do more hiking on the wondrous trials that Mount Spokane State Park has to offer.
