port of fun 10/4 – 10/10 2016

It was time for us to head west! West to Port Angeles Washington for the Dungeness Crab Seafood Festival. We would be joined by 9 other RV rigs at Elwha Dam RV Park.

Our trip started after work on Tuesday. We would drive to Frenchman Coulee and stay there for the night. We have stayed here for an overnights rest before. It is a perfect spot with easy access from the interstate. The views there are great, although when we arrived it was dark so no views until morning. We had a great nights rest and in the morning had our coffee and breakfast before heading west once again. We waited for a little bit so I could get a picture or two of our spot, waited on the sun that is.

We would take our time on the drive to Port Angeles making a couple stops and side trips to find a geocache or two. We had plenty of time to explore.

We made it to the resort around 2PM and got our spot set up. What a nice resort this was and the owners were great. We will return to this resort again.

There were two other rigs at the resort already when we got there. We talked to some friends of one of the rigs while we set up, the other friends were out exploring somewhere. Once we got things set we decided to head into town and go to the brewery. The brewery had food and we were hungry as well.

We returned to camp and talked with friends around the campfire. A nice end to the day.

The next day it would be another day of exploring. First it was a walk down to the site where the Elwha Dam use to be. The dam was removed a few years ago. The resort is right next to the site.

After our walk we gathered up a couple things and set out to sight see and geocache along the way. We would go west on Highway 112 with stops at Salt Creek, Clallam Bay, Neah Bay then on to Cape Flattery. Cape Flattery is the farthest you can go in the northwest corner of Washington.

We continued our drive a bit farther heading south along the shore. A couple other caches to find and sights to see. We did not make it to the fish hatchery but we will return again on another trip to explore and see more. It was getting late in the day and would need to get back to camp.

So back to camp. We would be accompanied by a few more event attendees at the resort. We would have another night of talking around the campfire to end a wonderful day.

Friday we would go to the Festival in town. This would be the first time attending this event and it was indeed a great time. We got there early and did a bit of walking around before the event opened. We would go to the little marine center there in the pier.  In the big tent was the food court. We would have lunch with some friends. Lots of great choices to sink your teeth into. After eating we would return back to camp and once again sit around the campfire talking with attendees to this event.

Saturday we would attend the festival once again. Cody and I did the Crab Derby, fishing for crab. That was pretty fun. We would make a drive to Port Townsend to do a bit of beer tasting at a couple breweries.  Then we made a stop at a winery along highway 101. After a bit of wine tasting it was back to camp for the night.

Sunday was farewell breakfast time for our group. We would stay another night before returning home on Monday. After breakfast we explored town a bit more and looked for a few more geocaches.

After our exploring the area we went back to camp. We sat around the campfire and was later joined by a couple others who were still staying at least another night from the rally.

Monday morning we got moving fairly early. It would be time for us to drive home. For the trip home we decided to go on a little longer drive going down highway 101 to Olympia, then around north to Tacoma then over to Interstate 90 to head east. The drive was filled with lots of sights on 101 and we stopped for lunch at a great little restaurant. We also stopped at a couple campgrounds to see what they were like.

When we got to Snoqualmie Pass we made a stop at a brewery to try a couple beers before heading home.

It was another wonderful trip to add to our memories. A bonus of getting to meet up with new and old friends on this trip. We have been talking about where to go for when Cody has spring break in April and decided that we want to return to Elwha Dam RV Resort and explore more of the area. So as of now that is our plan. For now, this trip was over and it was time to return to work. Return to work so we can get ready for our next outing that is.

  1. I enjoyed reading about your week of fun. You packed quite a few activities in that week. We are always trying to find scenic places to camp and Frenchman’s Coulee looks ideal. Can you tell me where you camped to get that waterfall view in the fourth image? I also read that there are rattlers there but are they on the rim or down in the coulee canyons? It is good that you have a big camper to fit all 5 pups in. We have 2 big poodles and are comfy but they sleep in the pop up part of camper while we sit at the dinette for supper. Happy trails.
