skiing the new year 12/31 2016 – 1/2 2017

The end of 2016 and the start of 2017 was upon us. We have celebrated the New Year in the past by camping and we would do the same this time as well. For this trip we would take the camper up to 49 Degrees North to stay and ski for three days. We started our trip early morning Saturday and made the hour drive up to the ski resort. We would get there about 7am and get a spot for the weekend. We opted for one of the power hookup sites. There were a few RV’s up at the resort when we arrived and most stayed until Monday as well. Our spot was just a very short walk to the resort. Pretty nice.

After having breakfast we walked up to the resort and spent the day skiing. The conditions were pretty darn good but a bit foggy. Nothing really bad, especially if you skied near the edges of the runs along the trees to get your bearings. Cody would ski with me for the most part while Joanne skied on the easier runs that she likes. We would meet up at the lodge for lunch.

After a bit more skiing we went back to the camper to spend the rest of the night. We had a nice campfire to end 2016. No, we did not stay up to midnight, not even close. We did have a great nights sleep.

Our phones had an alert telling us that a winter storm warning was active for the area. It did not lie. It started snowing in the evening and did not let up until the end of the next day. By the end, there was just over a foot of snow at the lodge and more up top. Skiing was epic! So much deep powder to ski. Cody and I made new tracks all over the mountain. Joanne hung out on her own down on the bunny hill area. I was surprised that there was not more skiers out but no problem, I have no issue with hogging all the fresh snow to myself. Cody has been skiing now for about 6 years. He has gotten pretty good and can follow me anywhere I go. So we decided to do a “double diamond” ski run. That kind of run is the hardest run the mountain has to offer and is for experts only. We had a blast skiing down the mountain on that run. It was the first time Cody did a double diamond, I was pretty proud of him.

Wow, what a great day of skiing. Like I said, it was epic. We ended the night back at the camper with sitting around the propane fire. I had used up most of the wood I brought so the propane fire it was. Of course that was after I shoveled around the camper and a trail out to the parking lot. The snow was deeper than our dachshunds are tall so the little trail was needed.

We ended the night by playing some dominoes with Cody in the camper. What a great first day of 2017.

After another great nights sleep it was Monday and our last day on the mountain for this trip. The skies were clear and the temperatures were much colder. It sure was pretty though. We would end up skiing a half day today. That would allow  us to return home and get the camper offloaded from the truck.

It was a perfect way to spend New Years Eve and the start of the new year. A way we always enjoy spending it. 2016 was filled with lots of trips and memories. We look forward to seeing what 2017 brings us. While we are not hosting a rally in 2017 we still have a few trips planned. Some with friends we have made in our travels. We look forward to seeing them again and meeting new ones.

We wish you the very best for 2017, now get that camper out and explore!
