A Scout outing this weekend, that is…a Boy Scout outing. I am a Merit Badge Counselor for the snow sports merit badge for my sons Boy Scout troop. We had plans to head up to ski at 49 Degrees North already so we combined it with going over that merit badge for any Scout who wished to go ski on Saturday with us. There ended up being 5 boys who could make the trip and earn their merit badge.
We made the drive to the mountain after work on Friday and arrived at 7 in the evening. This trip we chose to take a power site instead of the dry camping site. We got a few things set up then hung out inside and had dinner and relaxed the rest of the night.
The overnight low only got to around 22F, so really…it was pretty warm. The next morning showed us just how pretty of a day it would be.
Joanne made us breakfast and soon after that we gathered up our gear to go up to the resort. I got a couple chairs out and got our campfire ready for after our ski day.
At the lodge we met up with other Boy Scouts. We went over a few of the questions on snow sports to make sure the boys would meet the requirements for the merit badge. All the boys had a lot of experience in skiing so really, it was very easy. We then hit the slopes. It was a lot of fun skiing with them all. We skied several runs around the mountain. The resort still needs a good amount of snow to open all the way but I was pleasantly surprised how good it was with the lower amount of snow. The weather was fantastic today.
For those that have read previous blog stories or know me, know that I had knee surgery last August. I was more than happy to find that my knee felt awesome after a day of skiing. I guess the doc did a great job!
At the end of the ski day we said our goodbyes to the boys as they left with their parents. We then walked down to our camper for a night of relaxation around the campfire. What a great way to end the day.
I have had people ask what is so great about camping in the winter. Well, for us that is when we want to be around a campfire. When you dress warm and are prepared for it, winter is a great time to be out. Less crowds and the snow is very pretty.
On Sunday we did not ski. We had other plans for that day. After a good nights sleep we packed up our things and made the drive back home.
It had been about two months since our last outing with the camper, far too long. This was a great little weekend trip out with it. In a couple weeks we will once again head out. Of course a blog trip report will follow.
Merry Christmas to you all!
