A good snake 3/15 – 3/17 2024

Our weekend trip this time would be along the Snake River about 20 miles or so downriver from Clarkston Washington. There are several spots along the river and the road to camp at, all free of charge. The weekends weather was too great to not go out again even though we just got back home from our Oregon trip.

I got off work a little early to make the drive down to the river. I figured there probably would be a lot of people out camping and fishing on the river. In the end, there really was hardly anyone out in the area we spent the weekend at.

Right along the river.
This will do.

The road had some traffic but nothing really bad. At night there was no one going by. There are the railroad tracks by the road but they are not used a lot. We had one train go by Friday early evening and one go by on Saturday. No horn blowing so that was good.

We brought along Angel and Max because I think if we left them again instead of taking them camping there would be some kind of revenge set upon us.

Angel and Max.

We spent the rest of the day and evening relaxing by the river. We watched some deer grazing on the hills across from us and listened and watched birds fly about. That evening we used our propane campfire and enjoyed some star gazing.

This was nice.
Sun was starting to set.

We had a great nights sleep, very quite at camp. The next day we had no plans. Just a full day of hanging at camp and enjoying the sun and views.

A view out the dinette window.

The weather was above 60F during the day, our first nice and warm days this year. Warm enough I actually got into shorts and was very comfortable.

Enjoying the sun!

We had a bonus of entertainment on the river. One of the colleges had their rowing team out on the river practicing. There were several of them along with chase boats. That was an unexpected sight to see.

Rowers out practicing.

Again as mentioned, the day had zero plans and that was just fine with us. We had good meals and beverages throughout the day. This was a great reset to tackle another work week to come up.

A nice light snack.
A hazy IPA from our home brewery, Humble Abode.

We eventually started up the wood fire before the sun went behind the hills. The temperatures dropped quickly once the sun went away. The hills, they are pretty darn big here and in some places in the world they probably would call them mountains. The rise from the river to the tops of the hills would be anywhere from 1500-2000 feet above. So, pretty big elevation gain right away from the river.

Campfire time.

Another great evening spent along the Snake River. The next day we eventually got things packed up and started making our way back home. We did sidetrack slightly to find a geocache though. The view from the cache was pretty nice.

Wide open views.

The drive back home went just fine, no issues. We had wonderful weather for our short outing. Still really amazed that no one else was out enjoying the area for the weekend as well. That worked out for us as we had the whole area pretty much to ourselves.

We really do enjoy our trips along the Snake and Columbia rivers but are looking forward to getting back into the mountains. That will still take time for the snows to melt and allow us access into areas we enjoy. Soon enough though. Until then, these areas make for fantastic getaways.
